Difficulty Rating:
Handleable (5 out of 10)
Welcome to Unnkulian Underworld: The Unknown Unventure! ( Version 3.0 )
For those of you who have played text adventures, the format of this
game should be quite familiar. Like most text adventures, Unnkulian
Underworld places you in a situation and lets you figure out how to
manipulate your environment using commands phrased in simple English.
This game is the first in a series of adventures, and was created using
TADS ( see below for more information ).
I. THE GAME
Since you've gotten this far, you must have unpacked the game successfully.
I'd strongly suggest copying the game to a hard drive if
you've got one; the game will run MUCH faster.
For those of you unfamiliar with text adventures, here are some sample
commands:
get lamp
examine shrine
put green key in red box
eat slice of pizza
attack monster with pike
kick golden door
north ( can be just 'n' )
look under chair
get the key and the sword and the axe and the widget
get all
put the widget on the thingy
...and so forth. There are several specialized commands supported
that will be familiar to adventure junkies:
- "x" can be used for "examine"
- "i" for inventory - lists all carried items
- "g" for again - repeats last command
- "l" for look - prints room description
- "z" for wait - wait one turn
- "undo" - undo the last turn. Useful if you've screwed up! (New to
version 3.0)
- "verbose" - prints room descriptions each time a room is entered
- "brief" - prints room descriptions only the first time a room is
entered - standard mode
- "save" "restore" "restart" - commands to save or restart a game
- "score" - prints your current score and gives you some idea of how
well you're doing
- "space" - will toggle spacing between paragraphs on or off. (New to
version 3.0)
- "indent" - will toggle paragraph indenting on or off. (New to version 3.0)
Typing Function Key 1 on the keyboard will put the game in "Review Mode."
You can then use the cursor keys and "Page Up/Page Down" to scroll through
the last several pages of your game. On most systems, the game will save at
least ten pages of text. Type F1 again to return to the game.
Unnkulian Underworld has a big vocabulary. If the game doesn't understand
you, try a different word or a different way of phrasing your command.
The game is also fairly large - a bit over seventy rooms, and a good number
of objects. Making a map is strongly suggested, and we ain't kidding!
II. SPEAKING WITH CHARACTERS
You're not the only one wandering around Unnkulia! There are several
ways to talk to others in the game - try any or all of the following syntax
constructions...
Examples:
There is a huge green dragon here.
>dragon, hello
The dragon nods politely at you.
>ask dragon about the purple key
The dragon doesn't want to talk about that.
>tell dragon about the sword
The dragon's ears perk up.
>show sword to dragon
The dragon cowers in fright!
>dragon, follow me
The dragon bows its head in submission and agrees to follow you.
III. GENERAL HINTS
Examine everything, and not just the items you can pick up. There are
many things in the game that can be manipulated. Read the room descriptions
carefully.
Save often. There are many ways to die. Even the most innocent object
is potentially deadly!
The puzzles are all fairly logical. Some, however, require violating
certain sacrosanct principles of traditional adventure gaming.
IV. SHAREWARE, ADVENTIONS, AND YOU!
This game is shareware - that means if you like it, I'd appreciate some
monetary compensation. I'd like $10; I feel that amount reflects the work
and time I've put in, though anything you feel the game is worth would be
appreciated.
For the $10 registration fee, I'll send you a hint sheet for some
of the tough, early puzzles, a map of the surface and first underground
part, and put you on the ADVENTIONS mailing list. You'll learn about
"Unnkulian Unventure II - The Secret of Acme" by Dave Baggett, and other
forthcoming ADVENTIONS games including our first commercial release "Unnkulia
Zero: The Search for Amanda" (available early 1993.)
The hints include:
- How to open the iron grate
- How to fool the droll
- Things you probably missed on the surface
- The solution to the maze ( no more slogging through it! )
- Things to try for fun
To register, send US$10 to:
ADVENTIONS
PO Box 851
Columbia, MD 21044 USA
Please write "UU1 registration" on the outside of the envelope to
ensure rapid processing of your registration. Make checks payable to
D. A. Leary (not ADVENTIONS). You do not need to include a letter
with your check/money order/etc, but be sure you enclose a note with
your address on it if it's not on the payment.
Any specific questions, requests for hints, or suggestions will be
answered in detail provided you're a registered user. I'm always
happy to hear bug reports too... If you want to report a bug or typo,
be sure to include the version number of the copy you are playing, as
well as the configuration of the machine you are running it on.
ADVENTIONS has many other games available, including further
adventures in the ongoing Unnkulian saga. Send a self-addressed,
stamped envelope to the address above for a current catalog of our

Most game companies have abandoned interactive fiction because it
isn't profitable enough. We think that interactive novels are
exciting and important elements of the gaming world that offer
possibilities currently impossible to explore in graphics-oriented
settings. We spend as much time on our games as "normal" authors
spend on novels. Please support us to help keep the interactive
fiction genre alive. Thanks!
V. TADS
Unnkulian Underworld was designed using TADS, the Text Adventure
Development System. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in
writing adventures - anyone with a minimum of programming experience
can pick up TADS quickly and easily. TADS is available as shareware,
so you may be able to obtain TADS from the same place you found
this game.
For more information about TADS, please contact Michael J. Roberts at:
High Energy Software
P.O. Box 50422
Palo Alto, CA 94303
or call the High Energy BBS. (We think it's a happening place!) Set
your modem to 14,400bps (or any lower speed), N-8-1, and dial
415-493-2420. The BBS is open to the public -- you don't need to be
a registered user of any High Energy products to access the system.
High Energy can also be reached by electronic mail through selected
on-line services:
CompuServe: User ID 73737,417
GEnie: Mail Name M.ROBERTS10
Internet users can send electronic mail through CompuServe, and High
Energy can reply to Internet addresses. Send mail to
73737.417@compuserve.com (note that the comma in the CompuServe
address becomes a period for Internet users).
VI. A FINAL WORD
Unnkulian Underworld was originally written on an Atari ST. TADS made porting
the game trivial, and since version 1.2, I've been working on an IBM clone.
Thanks to Dave Baggett for his help with shoring up my pitiful code and
writing the now-classic sequel. Thanks to Tim ("Timon Marmex") Trzepacz for
helping us with mapz n' stuff. And thanks to Chris Nebel for his help in
banging together the Mac version. Bruce Davis and Tien-Seng Chiu were the
original playtesters, and their help was invaluable. And finally, without
Mike Roberts, this game could not have been written.
VII. VERSION 3.0 NOTES (1/93)
This version marks the first major update to "Unnkulian Underworld" in over a
year. Most of the bugs that have been reported have been fixed, and a few
details have been added. When the player scores points, the game says so. A
major bug that made it possible to win without solving several puzzles has
been fixed; those of you who won using one of the walk-throughs on the Net may
be in for a rude shock!
Perhaps the most major change is that players now have some control over
how the game spaces and indents paragraphs, especially room descriptions
(Thanx Dave!) and the addition of an UNDO command. See above for details.
If you've already registered an earlier version, you don't have to register
again! It was your support that led to this update, not to mention the
forthcoming "Unnkulia Zero" and "The Legend Lives!" So warm up those
adventure skills...you'll need them in the coming months!
Kudos to Robert Abernathy, the first person to solve "Unnkulian Underworld" -
and he did it without hints! So the rest of you losers have something to
shoot for...
